Total Hip Replacement – THR
Also called hip arthroplasty, it is a surgical procedure to address hip pain. The surgery replaces damaged parts of the hip joint with artificial implants.
Types of Hip Replacement
Total Hip Replacement
Both Acetabulum and femoral head are replaced.
Partial Hip Replacement
Only one part is replaced which is damaged.
Signs & Symptoms of Total Hip Replacement (THR) Need
- Severe hip-joint pain
- Fractured hip-joint
- Impairment of daily functions like walking, bending and rising from a seated position
- Inadequate supply of blood to the ball portion of hip-joint
- Inability to get restful sleep because of pain
Treatment of Total Hip Replacement (THR)
Step 1
The patient is given general anesthesia. At times, it is replaced with either spinal or epidural anesthesia and a nerve block.
Step 2
The surgeon makes an incision of 6-8 inches to expose the hip joint. The damaged part of the ball socket and cartilage on the surface of the femoral head and acetabulum are removed.
Step 3
The metal or ceramic ball is implanted at the upper part of the femoral head. The metal stem is inserted into the pelvis bone with the help of screws or cement to hold the socket.
Step 4
The plastic, metal or ceramic spacer is implanted between the metal ball and socket to allow for a smooth surface.
Step 5
The cut is closed with stitches and covered with dressing.
