Oral Cancer

Also known as Mouth Cancer, Oral Cancer can develop in any part of the mouth, including the tongue, the gums, the palate (roof of the mouth), under the tongue, and the skin lining the mouth or the lips.

Types of Oral Cancer

Carcinoma

It develops on the inside or outside layer of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of mouth cancer.

Oral Malignant Melanoma

This cancer starts in cells called melanocytes, which help give skin its color.

Adenocarcinomas

This type of cancer develops inside the salivary glands.

Signs & Symptoms of Oral Cancer

White patches anywhere in the mouth (leukoplakia)
Red patches anywhere in the mouth (erythroplakia)
A lump on the lip, tongue, mouth, or throat
Unusual bleeding or numbness in the mouth
Pain when chewing or swallowing
Loose teeth or dentures not fitting properly
A change in the voice or speech problems
Weight loss

Treatment of Oral Cancer

The treatment depends on the type and stage of the oral cancer and typically includes surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.

Surgery

Surgery involves removing the affected tissues in the mouth and neck. If the tumor is large, parts of the palate, tongue, or jaw may also be removed.

Radiotherapy

Oral cancers are very receptive and respond well to radiation therapy. The therapy can be given externally or through radioactive seeds or wires placed inside the body.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy involves using powerful medicines that kill cancer. These drugs can be given alone or in combination with other cancer treatments. Chemotherapy may increase the effectiveness of radiation therapy.
