Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

It is an assisted reproductive technology wherein a single sperm is injected into a healthy egg for fertilization.

Common Indications for Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

  • Unexplained fertilization failure in an IVF cycle
  • Low sperm count
  • Decreased sperm motility, including totally immotile sperm
  • An unusually high percentage of morphologically abnormal sperm, including round-headed sperm (globozoospermia)
  • Obstructive azoospermia
  • Absence of sperm in the ejaculate due to defective sperm production (non-obstructive azoospermia)
  • Ejaculatory dysfunction
  • Immunological factors; anti-sperm antibodies in female sera, follicular fluid, or on sperm caused by vasectomy or genital tract infection
  • Testicular cancer patients with semen samples frozen prior to treatment

Treatment of Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Step 1

The doctor places the egg on a lab dish using a pipette.

Step 2

A single sperm is immobilized and picked up via a thin needle.

Step 3

This needle is inserted into the egg to reach the cytoplasm.

Step 4

The sperm is injected into the cytoplasm.

Step 5

The needle is withdrawn from the egg.
