Treatment of Deep Brain Stimulation
Lead Placement
The patient undergoes a CT scan to identify target points for implantation. Using a surgical drill, the surgeon makes a small opening in the skull to insert the leads.
Pulse Generator Placement
The surgeon inserts the neurostimulator under the outer layers of skin, usually just under the collarbone, but sometimes in the chest or abdomen. Then the extension wires are connected to the DBS electrodes and the pulse generator before sewing the skin shut.
