Carpal Tunnel Release/Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness, tingling, pain and weakness in the hand caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. Carpal tunnel release is the surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome.

Signs & Symptoms of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

  • Numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand
  • An electric shock-like feeling mostly in the thumb, index, and long fingers
  • Strange sensations and pain going up the arm toward the shoulder
  • Stiffness in the fingers when getting up in the morning
  • Pain in the forearm between the elbow and wrist

Treatment of Carpel Tunnel Release/Syndrome

Open Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

The surgeon makes a single cut (3 to 4 cm long) near the base of the palm. He/she then divides the carpal ligament to relieve pressure on the median nerve. Afterwards, the cut is closed with stitches.

Keyhole Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

The surgery involves two minor cuts (about 1 to 2cm long). The first cut is on the inside of the wrist and the second is in the palm of the hand. The surgeon divides the carpal ligament via these cuts to relieve pressure on the median nerve.
