Signs & Symptoms of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)

  • Wandering or shakey eyes
  • Eyes don’t follow objects
  • Pupils look white
  • Trouble recognizing faces

Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)

Eye Surgery

Scleral Buckle Surgery

A flexible band is placed around the sclera (the white part of the eye) which supports the detached retina until the eye starts growing normally.

Vitrectomy

Small openings are made in the eye wall to remove most of the vitreous (the gel-like fluid that fills the eye) and replace it with saline solution. The doctor then removes the scar tissue on the retina.

Laser Surgery/Cryotherapy

  • Laser surgery uses a beam of light to create scar tissue on the peripheral retina where abnormal blood vessels have not yet reached. Cryotherapy destroys the fringe of the retina through freezing.

Injections

  • Anti-VEGF drugs are injected into the eyes which block the growth of abnormal blood vessels.
